The 1957 Aermacchi Chimera 175 motorcycle was made in Italy. It featured an air-cooled, single cylinder engine. The ignition was by battery and coil. The engine was rated at 13 b.h.p. The engine displacement was 172.4cc based upon a bore and stroke of 60 X 61mm. Fuel was supplied via a single Dell'Orto carburetor. Getting the power to the ground was by a four speed transmission. The suspension featured front telescopic forks and a rear single shock. Stopping was by drum brakes. The motorcycle weighed in at 318 pounds. Top speed for the bike was 65 m.p.h. |
According to the museum's fact sheet "Designed by Alfred Bianchi, from a sketch of "The Ultimate Motorcycle" by Count Mario Revelli, the Chimera (Dream) was certainly futuristic. Its totally enclosed styling and rear single shock suspension was too radical for the Italian public and sales were poor. Redesigned as a sports machine, with conventional twin rear shocks and exposed motor, sales improved. This concept evolved into the H.D. sprint models that are familiar to enthusiasts in the U.S.A." |
